I’m a Babywearer!!!

June 28, 2008 at 11:37 pm (INDIGO) (, , , )

Kate from the HE group showed me how to carry Indi in my ring sling & the mei tai I made. I wore him for at least an hour walking around the shops in the mei tai pictured below, AND he fell asleep in there!
I’m so chuffed! We were able to get around easily, no bumping into stuff with a pram for us anymore ;)
Admittedly though, my shoulders started aching towards the end - I’ll have to see if it’s just the way I had the mei tai strapped on.
I bought a Moby wrap which *should* arrive by Tuesday, the colour I chose was called Indigo!

Quick Update

June 25, 2008 at 7:56 pm (INDIGO) (, )

Indigo got weighed today - 13 lbs and half an oz! He’s getting so big so quick, I must be doing something right!!

Also, the health visitors at the baby group have put my name forward for training as a breastfeeding ‘peer’, how cool is that?!

We’re using the cloth nappies constantly now, even at night in bed & when we go out.

Got home-ed group tomorrow & I can’t wait, like-minded folk and all that ;)

Anyway, little dude needs nappy changing then it’s time for bed …

but I’ve got nappies to dry & stuff to get ready for tomorrow & I can’t get hold of Mum… Argh!

Attempt At Arty-Farty Photos!

June 21, 2008 at 11:20 pm (INDIGO) (, , )

I should’ve used my better camera but when you’ve got a co-operative baby you grab what you can as quick as you can!

Indigo is two months old tomorrow, can you believe how quickly time has passed? I’m already dreading the days of meeting new girlfriends and him leaving home :(
So, I’m relishing these baby days and from now on will record as much as possible.

One for my sis

June 19, 2008 at 9:54 pm (INDIGO) (, , )

My little sister, Jess, is an art teacher living far, far away in Devon, sorry - Somerset! (lucky bugger!) We don’t get to see her as often as we’d like (every day!) and the signal in her part of the world is awful so even phone calls are few & far between.

Anyway, Jess - we miss you loads!

Here’s a photo of my beautiful sister & her nephew :)

Wet Wet Wet

June 18, 2008 at 8:31 am (Birth, INDIGO) (, , , , )

No, not the band - the weather! You’d think I’d avoid going out when it’s miserable & wet outside but I’m still trying to find ways to get out of the house!
I’ve got my first organic vegbox  (http://www.riverford.co.uk/ and http://riverford.wordpress.com/) coming around midday, hooray! REAL food! Now to find time to make yummy meals.
We’re meeting Jeff from work & going to the garden centre… to buy flowers! But that’s not until 4pm so I’ve got 8 hours to find stuff to do.

Indi’s still sleeping well, only waking twice and no screaming fits. Did he ever have colic or has my going vegan helped him too? Well I’m not going to have dairy to test it!
He’s cat-napping through the day though, not sleeping for more than 20 minutes at a time and really fighting it! I didn’t bother taking him up until gone 9 last night, first time in ages that I’ve turned on the livin room light!
He had a day of disposables yesterday because we spent the whole day at Mum’s, back to cloth today, I’m getting the hang of it now. Indi’s quite the pee’er though, he’s in his second nappy and we’ve not been up 2 hours!

I’ve decided that oneday Indi WILL have a little brother or sister. I can still remember all the pain and horrible-ness we went through but now I can see that it does get better and I can heal. I won’t be planning a natural birth next time. It’ll be either epidural or c-section. Disappointing I know but can’t go through that again :(
Plenty of time for all that though, Indi’s got a few years of being the only child to come still!

Three nights of…

June 16, 2008 at 8:28 am (INDIGO) (, )

… SLEEP!

Indi’s woken up just twice in each of the 3 past nights! OK, so it’s taken a couple of hours to get him to sleep & he uses up every last drop of breastmilk doing so but I don’t care! He’s woken up in the morning with a smile on his face, happy enough to look around the room and kick me in the belly until I’m ready to get up :)

*Feeling the squishy baby love!*

Yesterday Was Hectic But Fun

June 13, 2008 at 12:03 pm (INDIGO) (, , , , )

Because Indi was too tired to go and visit Nancy after baby group on Wednesday I had to plan my day around giong there and going to the Home Ed group at noon and walking Sky!
We left the house at 9am to visit Nancy, left Nancy’s at 10:45 to pick up Sky from the house and be on the train at 11:15, at Mum’s at 11:30 where I gave Indi a quick feed then we got to the HE group at 12:10! Left the group at 14:45, had some food at Mum’s (Very yummy homemade soup and breadrolls!) took the dogs for an hour’s walk and then met Jeff from work at 17:30. It’s no wonder Indi and I went to bed at 8!
Oh, and all this is after I’d been woken at 3AM by Indi screaming and getting just 45 mins kip before getting on with the day!

Anyway, the Home Ed group was FANTASTIC!
I’ve never felt so at home with a bunch of people in real life. They’re pro: breastfeeding, co-sleeping, non-vaxing, babywearing and the majority of them do unschooling, hooray! Their children were happy, energetic things and not a single one of them was overweight or unhealthy (I see so many unfit kids struggling to run around at playtime in schoolyards :( ). There were 11 kids there and just 1 of them was a girl. Kate (the organiser) was telling me that when girls get to a certain age they end up wanting to return to school due to wanting to be with more girls their own age. No problems with that here!
I was given loads of advice and Mum, who was contemplating taking Connor out of school, has been given the confidence to take him out the year before he goes to comprehensive. She says his handwriting and other skills don’t seem to be good enough for him to take into comprehensive school. Mum won’t be going down the unschooling route though, quite the opposite obviously!
For my little guy I prefer to unschool. I’ll have to convince Jeff about it - he thinks we can set up the front room as a classroom *HORROR*!!! Plenty of time for all that though!
Indi slept through the first hour of us being there but as soon as he was awake he was whisked away to be cooed over! Even some of the kids wanted to hold and cuddle him!
There’s another meeting in a fortnight and we’re taking Connor to meet the other children, he’s really excited about it, although that might be helped by having the day off school!

Indi’s stirring now so I’d better go and try and get some food in me before he makes that impossible!

The Community Centre Has No Roof.

June 11, 2008 at 5:00 pm (INDIGO) (, )

Because Indi screamed it down!!

I had just had him weighed and was redressing him when he decided to bawl his little eyes out, for a very long time! The health visitors thought it was funny that he quietens down when he’s jiggled roughly, I decided to not tell them about me pushing the pram on the grass verge rather than the pavement yesterday to get him to sleep!
It turned out that he was hungry, again ( I had only just fed him before we left) and, of course, tired. I left as soon as he was settled and came home to Jeff sleeping on the sofa. I made myself a quick sandwich before Indi started to whinge again then decided to take him to bed. That was nearly two hours ago and he’s still fast asleep on the bed (farting his little butt off!) with me & Skylar! Jeff’s gone out to give his brother’s Mini (real one, not BMW rubbish!) a service before his MOT.
I was planning on visiting Nancy but I’d rather Indi have a good sleep than be all grizzly at her house. We’ll pop in tomorrow, I’ll have to go down early morning as we have HE group at noon.
*Sara panics about fitting it all in & keeping everyone happy!*

Oh, by the way, Indi weighs exactly 12lbs - that’s what I predicted :D But you know what? He’s still lighter than one or two of our cats!

Busy Day

June 11, 2008 at 10:54 am (INDIGO, Misc) (, , , )

Yesterday morning I had my follow up appointment down the birth centre… What a sweltering waste of time!
The whole birth centre was like a sauna, oh except for the room where they take your blood pressure - a shortlived relief from the heat! I felt sorry for the heavily pregnant women and the babies (including my own) who had to sit in it. We waited for a while then was called and this is how it went:
Consultant: How’s the baby?
Me: He’s fine, doing well.
Consultant: How are you?
Me: Fine too.
Consultant: Are you breastfeeding?
Me: Yes
Consultant: I see you had 2nd degree tearing
Me: No, it was 3rd degree… We had this confusion at the hospital!
Consultant: Ok, well I’ll make you an appointment at the pelvic floor clinic. Bye then.

And that was it!!
From there we did a bit of shopping, bought some cheapy towels to make nappies out of - or rather for Mum to make nappies out of, got back to Mum’s for a light lunch, took the dogs for a walk then went home. Doesn’t sound like much but we left the house at 9am and didn’t get back until 5pm!
Indi was really fussy so I had to take him to bed before 8 but it took an hour for him to settle. I swaddled him and let him nurse to sleep. Thankfully I had the laptop upstairs so I didn’t have to watch boring TV!
He had a GREAT night’s sleep though. Didn’t wake up until midnight-ish, I didn’t have to do anything - he whinged for a few seconds then went back to sleep until 2.30. I changed his nappy, fed him then we slept until about 5. Fed him again and he didn’t stir for another two hours.
I’ve noticed he doesn’t sleep for longer than 3 hours at night, not a problem for me though as he’s by my side the whole time.

Today we’re going to baby group to get him weighed then down to Nancy’s. Jeff’s taking half day so hopefully he’ll join us.

Tomorrow is our first visit to the home education group. Mum’s coming along because she’s thinking about taking Connor out of school. I can’t wait to meet the other HE parents :)

A ‘Non-Indi’ Post…

June 9, 2008 at 1:29 pm (INDIGO, Misc) (, , , , )

I am vegan again!!!
*Jumps around room with sheer joy*

An online friend, Meeshi, suggested cutting out dairy to help ease Indi’s gassiness and it gave me the push to get my body rid of all animal products altogether. This is day two of official vegandom after spending the last 4 days cutting back.
There’s many reasons why I want to be vegan, and they are:
1, Animal welfare/rights etc. The thought of eating an animal is abhorrent, just knowing what those poor animals go through in their lives and then to be killed and eaten by this gluttonous race sinks my heart and soul.
2, I may be just one person but I’m one more person who is not contributing to the dire effect that mass farming has on the environment. And before anyone says “but they’re cutting down rainforests for your soy” let me tell you that they are cutting down rainforests to grow soy for ‘cattle’, they cut down rainforests for grazing land for their cattle. So get your facts straight first please!
3, For me, it is cheaper. I don’t like to rely on processed vegan food and there is very little speciality vegan food locally so I tend to cook from scratch which is always cheaper.
4, Health. Fresh fruit and veg, rice, pasta, quinoa, seeds and nuts. No butter or cheese or eggs. I’ve been bouyed by my weightloss due to walking everyday so eating healthier is going to help me even more.

Onto the weightloss thing, I know I’ll never get my pre-preggo bod back thanks to extensive stretchmarks but oneday I WILL fit back into my size 10 jeans! (In a size 16 right now)
